From Conway’s Law to Joyful Teams: Architecture, Org Design and the Hedonic Principle Video

Modern software architectures rarely fail purely because of technology; they fail because of organizational structures and a lack of motivation within teams. Conway’s Law tells us that systems mirror communication structures – but what happens when those structures are dysfunctional and change is experienced as painful? This talk explores how architectural work, organizational design, and the hedonic principle can be combined to gradually transform "Conway-driven" structures into more pleasant and high-performing teams. Using real-world examples from large organizations, it shows how small, positively experienced changes are more sustainable than big-bang reorganizations, and how architectural decisions can be shaped to foster intrinsic motivation instead of resistance. Attendees will learn how to deliberately work with Conway’s Law, shaping team boundaries, interfaces, and responsibilities so that good architectures can emerge in the first place – and which techniques help turn frustrated delivery teams into joyful teams that actively embrace change.
